Everyday, we are seeing more websites which are built with HTML5 as it offers features that web designers waited for a long time.

If you have already started building websites with HTML5, W3C announced the official logo of HTML5 where you can insert into these websites.

HTML5 Logo

Besides the HTML5 itself, there are also logos for the features and principles HTML5 is built around like semantics, offline and storage, CSS3 and more.

Other than the logos in multiple formats (including vector), there is an online badge builder provided where you can customize the icons to be used, select its orientation and get an embed code to start using instantly.

jQuery project has just published the expected jQuery Mobile; the touch-optimized web framework for smartphones & tablets.

It is built on top of jQuery and provides a unified user interface system that’llperform the same in all popular mobile device platforms.

The framework is built around the principle of progressive enhancement and uses the HTML5 and CSS3 features but degrades nicely for browsers that don’t support them.

jQuery Mobile

Currently, there are various components offered like pages-dialogs, toolbars, buttons, content formatting, form elements and list views.

jQuery Mobile also comes with a powerful theming structure and it is app-cabaple which means it will work with real-apps besides mobile-web-apps.

It is currently in alpha release but still very promising and works in major mobile browsers.

Building a web application can be a lot of fun. However, there is a problem if we are having a web app with users in more languages than just English. Where do you start with internationalisation? Steve Ellis published a great article aboutHow To Give Your Web Application an International Appeal which breaks into two parts. In Part I Steve Ellis covered the basics of internationalisation. In Part II he takes us around the world with several real life examples, like tricky plurals, dynamic data, localising images, video and audio, and more.

Data URIs, which is a way of using data in-line in web pages, is a great method for minimizing HTTP requests and speeding up websites.

The common usage is simply encoding data (mostly background-images) in Base 64 and including it to the stylesheets.

Spritebaker

Spritebaker is a free web application which automates this process for you.

Just mention the URL of the CSS file, it will search for the background-images + fonts (non-local ones) and create a new stylesheet with these stuff converted to Data URIs.

However, don’t forget that Data URIs usage isn’t perfect yet like the CSS file will grow (you must turn on gzip-compression) or <IE8 browsers will be incompatible. It’ll be a good idea to check the suggestions by Spritebaker.

While starting a web project, we usually use a set of resources like CSS-reset, various JS hacks for IE, etc. to overcome browser incompability issues.

HTML5 Reset is a project which aims to offer a base for the HTML5-CSS3 projects which covers these issues by default.

HTML5 Reset

Besides the standard HTML tags, it has rules to reset the new tags like title, header, footer and JavaScript-powered fixes for IE.

The set comes in 2 versions:

  • Bare Bones (stripped down to the essentials)
  • Kitchen Sink (when we want the option to remove features, rather than add them)

Inside the download package, there is also a sample content provided to help you get started.

MyWebSql is a web-based and open source MySQL client that is built withPHP.

It has an Ajaxed interface and besides the rows of tables, it can control views, stored procedures, triggers and functions.

MyWebSql

Data can be exported and imported easily (query results can be exported as well).

MyWebSql comes with a syntax highlighting rich-text SQL editor to run queries (the last-ran query is shown automatically which is a nice reminder).

The application is improved frequently and, within time, can become a good alternative to mature solutions.
